We begin another journey through Lent. Our gospel reading reminds us again, as it does every year, why we set aside these forty days – kali sarakosti – which culminates for us in the Great and Holy Week and the mystery of the cross.
Today we celebrate καθαρή-δευτέρα (Clean Monday). It is a public holiday in Greece and Cyprus where it is celebrated with outdoor excursions, the consumption of shellfish and other fasting food, a special kind of bread eaten only on that day, named ‘Lagana” (Greek λαγνα) and the widespread custom of flying kites. Eating meat, eggs and dairy products is traditionally forbidden to Orthodox Christians throughout Lent, with fish being eaten only on major feast days, but shellfish is permitted in European denominations. This has created the tradition of eating elaborate dishes based on seafood (shellfish, molluscs, fish roe etc). Traditionally, it is considered to mark the beginning of the spring season.
All around Greece the local bakers have been up all night to prepare the thousands of loaves which will be consumed today. Many bakers enhance the traditional Lagana with Olives, Onion or Garlic to accompany the delicious food that will be eaten today.READ MORE

On the Third Wednesday of January our Community Connect Northern Suburbs met to celebrate the New Year by the cutting of the Traditional Vassilopitta, New Year’s Cake. Tradition has it that a coin is hidden inside the cake when it is baked, and whoever finds the coin in their slice when it is cut, is considered to have good luck for the coming year.
Community Connect Northern Suburbs, based in Kifissia, has been going for over six years and was the idea of our Deacon Chris Saccali. She recognised that there was need for friends in the Northern Suburbs to be able to meet up occasionally and share news over a cup of coffee, preferably somewhere central. READ MORE
The 15th Spring Organ Series of Concerts will take place at St Paul’s Anglican Church, Athens, from Sunday 18th March 2018 until Sunday 6th May 2018.
Under the auspices of our Musical Director and Organist, MsChristina Antoniadou, BMus, MMus, LRAM (Graduate RAM & RSAMD), these series of concerts have become part of the musical life of this City. SOS is one of the longest music festivals in Athens and unique of its genre in Greece, bringing world premieres and uniting artists from many continents (Europe, Australia, South America). The calibre and breadth of the concerts is a testament of the high regard with which Christina is held in music circles.
