He is risen

Order of Service for Easter 2 Zoom Meeting 19 April 2020

Happy Easter! Welcome to our Easter 2 Sunday worship brought to our homes by Zoom.  When we begin our worship on your screen with your mouse/or on your pad find the microphone icon and click on it to ensure your voice is muted – many voices at one time don’t work. However if you are leading any part of the service remember to turn it back on again! After the worship we can have a short chat and coffee together. Today, of course, is Easter Sunday for the Orthodox. Καλό Πάσχα.

The hymns and other shared texts you might know by heart, or you can print out this service, or you may have a hymn book at home, or you may be happy to listen in silence.

Priest: Alleluia! Christ is risen

      All:     He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

1 This joyful Eastertide
away with sin and sadness!
our Lord, the crucified
has filled our hearts with gladness:
Had Christ, who once was slain,
not burst his three-day prison
our faith would be in vain
but now has Christ arisen,
arisen, arisen, arisen.

         2 My being shall rejoice
secure within God’s keeping,
until the trumpet voice
shall wake us from our sleeping:
Chorus

3 Death’s waters lost their chill
when Jesus crossed the river;
his love shall reach me still,
his mercy is for ever:
Chorus

The priest then welcomes the people of God and the deacon leads us into Confession.

Risen Christ, for whom no door is locked, no entrance barred; open the doors of our hearts, that we may seek the good of others and walk the joyful road of sacrifice and peace, to the praise of God the Father.  Amen.

First Reading    (please sit)                                                             Acts 2, 14a, 22-32

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. “You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know— this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. For David says concerning him, ‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken;therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;  moreover my flesh will live in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One experience corruption.
You have made known to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’“Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. Foreseeing this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying,‘He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption.’ This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses.

This is the word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God. Alleluia!

Gospel Hymn

 Now the green blade rises from the buried grain,
Wheat that in the dark earth many years has lain;
Love lives again, that with the dead has been:
Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.

 In the grave they laid Him, Love Whom we had slain,
Thinking that He’d never wake to life again,
Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen:
Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.

 Up He sprang at Easter, like the risen grain,
He that for three days in the grave had lain;
Up from the dead my risen Lord is seen:
Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.

When our hearts are saddened, grieving or in pain,
By Your touch You call us back to life again;
Fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been:
Love is come again, like wheat that springs up green.

 Gospel Reading

Deacon:     Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! The Lord is risen. Alleluia!

All:           Alleluia

 Deacon:   The Lord be with you

All:            and also with you

 Deacon: Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. John    (John 20, 19-end)

All:          Glory to you, O Lord

When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.” A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

At the end of the Gospel

Deacon:  This is the gospel of the Lord, Alleluia!

All:           Praise to you, O Christ.           Alleluia

 Sermon   Fr. Leonard (A printed and audio version of the Sermon will be available on the website shortly after the service)

Hymn        (you might now like to put aside your collection for today, but also the collections for previous Sundays when we have not been able to meet as a church)

Love’s redeeming work is done,
fought the fight, the battle won.
Lo, our Sun’s eclipse is o’er!
Lo, he sets in blood no more!

 Vain the stone, the watch, the seal!
Christ has burst the gates of hell;
death in vain forbids him rise;
Christ has opened paradise.

 Lives again our victorious King;
where, O death, is now thy sting?
Dying once, he all doth save;
where thy victory, O grave?

Soar we now where Christ has led,
following out exalted Head;
made like him, like him we rise,
ours the cross, the grave, the skies.

 Hail the Lord of earth and heaven!
Praise to thee by both be given:
thee we greet triumphant now;
hail, the Resurrection thou!

 Closing Prayers

The Lord’s Prayer:  (to be prayed in your own language)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord God our Father, through our saviour Jesus Christ you have assured your children of eternal life and in baptism have made us one with him; deliver us from the death of sin and raise us to new life in your love, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
